Osborne's elegant Malpica Winery is where Spain's wine traditions and cutting-edge technology come together! While Osborne's Bodegas Montecillo in the famed Rioja region, maintains both its cultural winemaking roots and its commitment to Spain's traditional Tempranillo grape. The Malpica winery branches out in terms of varietals and high-tech innovation. Malpica is located about 60 miles south of Madrid, a stone’s throw from Toledo. The winery and vineyards were started in 2001 and are home to vast vineyards and stunning facilities, well-equipped for tours and tastings which explains why they are a hotspot for Spanish wine tour destinations.

High-Technology helps to babysit the Vines

The Malpica winery was intentionally located outside of Spain's regional wine classification system and districts. This allows the family to have free reign over what varietals they can grow and utilize in their wines made onsite. It also allows them to experiment with a myriad of other varietals to evaluate how well they grow in the region. Just picture a row of Zinfandel vines growing in the middle of Spain, literally, it's part of their ongoing viticultural science project - varietals from all over the world are given a go on Spanish turf to see if they might be a good fit for Osborne's Solaz wines. With over 2,500 acres of planted vineyards and another 1,500 acres of vineyards on the planning board, this is one of Europe's most comprehensive viticultural undertakings. Using specialized CAD equipment, vineyard managers are able to track down a vine’s growth and progress, down to the last drop of water that a vine receives. Each of the vines is specifically mapped out and accounted for on the vineyard manager’s computer system, allowing for fine tuning to take place in terms of water, nutrient input and the like.
