The Chardonnay grape itself contributes to the wine’s popularity. It is a relatively “low-maintenance” vine that adapts well to a variety of climates, resulting in fairly high yields worldwide. These high yields translate into millions of bottles of Chardonnay wines. As a result, you can buy a good bottle of Chardonnay for around $10.

1. Jacob's Creek Chardonnay 2004 (Australia) $7

A classic Chardonnay, with flavors of peach, ripe melon and tart apple. There is a touch of oakiness that mingles well with the slightly acidic finish. This refreshing white wine pairs well with grilled chicken and veggies or a shrimp linguine.

2. Eola Hills Chardonnay 2002 (Oregon) $9

A crisp Chardonnay with ripe pear flavors that would be a terrific complement to grilled Salmon or smoked Tuna.

3. Fetzer Vineyards 2002 Chardonnay (California) $9

A medium-bodied wine with lively pineapple and lemon flavors, enhanced by vanilla and oak. This wine would pair well with Brie cheese, or a seafood dish.

4. Angeline Chardonnay 2003 (California) $10

An award winning Chardonnay with characteristic oak and tropical fruit flavors. A terrific value at only $10 a bottle.

5. Canyon Road Chardonnay 2003 (California) $9

A well balanced medium-bodied white wine bursting with fresh citrus flavors, finishing on a crisp note of oak and butter.

6. Carmenet Chardonnay Cellar Selection 2002 (California)

More fruit than oak and more acid than cream, this wine is an easy-going everyday wine that will bring out the best in a variety of cheeses ranging from a subtle Brie to a richly flavored Camembert.

7. Forest Glen Winery Chardonnay 2002 (California) $10

This is a complex Chardonnay with ripe pear and tart apple, supported with a toasted oak finish.

8. Excelsior Chardonnay 2002 (South Africa) $8

A clean, crisp Chardonnay full of melon, lemon and apple with good solid balance.

9. Round Hill Chardonnay 2003 (California) $8

A golden, yellow tinted Chardonnay with citrus flavors and a creamy finish.
