Windows on the World Complete Wine Course

Kevin Zraly
Kevin Zraly's 25th anniversary edition of the Windows on the World Complete Wine Course is a comprehensive wine education adventure. From wine regions and varietal tastings, to food-pairings and cellar tips, Kevin does a remarkable job of leading readers through a solid wine primer.

What makes this book even better is that Kevin systematically holds your hand and personally guides you through regional wine tastings in a step-by-step format that allows you to get both a handle on the wine and an enticing glimpse of the wine region as a whole.

The Bottom Line:

Kevin Zraly is one of the wine world's top authorities on wine and wine education. He’s personally taken over 19,000 students through wine education courses at his Windows on the World Wine School, and over 3 million people have received an engaging, hands-on wine education via his Windows on the World Complete Wine Course book. This year marks the 25th edition of the Windows on the World Complete Wine Course and with that Kevin has gone the distance to cover more countries, more regions, more wines and more vines from around the globe, all without overwhelming the reader with ho-hum facts and endless figures.

He effectively breaks down the intricacies of the wine world into bite-sized chunks for those just tiptoeing into the wine scene with hands-on application, a quick wit and a casual, conversational writing style, yet seamlessly turns it up a notch for those wine enthusiasts that have spent more time with the vine. Bringing relevant, user-friendly content, credible, easy-to-follow course design and a long-term love affair with wine to the table, Kevin has created an outstanding introduction and comprehensive foundation on which to build and expand your own wine education.

This is a one of kind, “go to” wine book that will continue to woo those with a budding wine interest, while simultaneously serving to fill knowledge gaps that seasoned enthusiasts didn’t know existed until they encountered the different angles and expert focus that Kevin’s coursework provides. Kevin spends the first few pages covering the basics, but then radiates out from their and turns every major growing region into a hands-on wine adventure. Complete with regional maps, quick tips, fun stories, key producers, values and vintages to know and of course a full-blown wine tasting that allows readers to cover the region’s highlighted wines with a personal tasting experience. These wine tastings are presented in such a dynamic manner, that you can’t help but feel that you’ve snuck into one of Zraly’s NYC classes and are being guided through each wine by Kevin personally.

If you were to use this book, as it’s designed as a true blue wine education course, complete with eight full-fledged classes (and for those wanting to test their new knowledge, each “class” ends with critical content review questions) you could not help coming away with a very solid wine education. Not only would your enjoyment of wine grow exponentially with such a solid primer, but your confidence when selecting, buying and tasting wines would soar as well.

Like a favorite wine, Windows on the World Complete Wine Course, is a well-balanced, highly engaging and completely approachable wine education for those wine lovers desiring to take their passion for wine to the next level.

Pros

A user-friendly book that effectively builds a solid wine education foundation.
Excellent consolidation of information into easily accessible chapters and sections.
    Well-organized for easy reference.
Appreciate the course-design, complete with review questions at the end of each chapter.

Cons

A very minor "con," but I would love to see space for personal tasting notes after each class tasting section.
