Definition: A defined viticultural growing region, whereby specific grape varietals are grown, harvested and made into wines. In France it is called an "Appellation of Origin" (AOC for short) and refers to a specific wine growing region and often hints at the varietals grown, methods employed and winemaking styles. In the U.S. the appellations are referred to as "American Viticultural Areas" (AVAs for short) and are merely recognized, designated grape growing regions.
