Elena Walch Winery

By Stacy Slinkard, About.com

S. Slinkard
Elena Walch married into one of Alto Adige's premier family-run wine estates. The estate was established in 1869 and is known for producing award winning white and red wines. An architect, by trade, Elena took over vineyard and winemaking operations for the family's prestigious vineyards and has taken to designing top quality wines with amazing aromatics and concentrated fruit character. By deliberately reducing vineyard yields she has increased the intensity of the fruit, giving feet to her philosophy that, "The complexity and the quality has to be in the fruit itself, oak is only used to complement the fruit."

Wines to Try at Elena Walch:

Elena Walch produces over 25 wines, with an impressive portfolio accomodating a solid range of varietals and price points. One of her signature wines is "Beyond the Clouds," a full-bodied Chardonnay based blend that delivers engaging floral aromas, ultra ripe tropical fruit in the form of pineapple, melon, peach and a bit of seasoned apple. For those interested in a red wine from the estate, opt for the Kermesse - a Syrah blend that brings well integrated tannins into perfect harmony with the ripe berry fruit.

Visiting the Elena Walch Estate:

I would call or email ahead to schedule an appointment to visit Weingut (means "wine estate") Elena Walch. There is a wine store and a restaurant, Castel Ringberg, on site. The area that the winery is located in is nothing short of breathtaking, with a large patio overlook that gives glimpses into the quaint town of Tramin as well as the surrounding vistas.
