Barboursville Vineyards on the Monticello Wine Trail

Barboursville Vineyards

Barboursville Vineyards is a "must-see," "must-taste" stop on any Monticello Wine Trail excursion. Only eight miles from James Madison's home, Montpelier, and an easy trek from Charlottesville, Barboursville Vineyards represents the best of Virginia wine country all under one roof. From a welcoming tasting room and gift shop that sells boxed picnic lunches and wine, to the prestigious Palladio restaurant, and a lofty lineup of Old World inspired wines to over 150 acres under vine - Barboursville has it all, history, landscape, fine wine, choice food, wine country accomodations and much more.

Wines to Try from Barboursville Vineyards:

All along the Monticello Wine Trail, you'll hear whispers of "Octagon" - a knock your socks off Bordeaux blend consistently crafted by Luca Paschina, head winemaker and general manager of Barboursville Vineyards. Luca's wine philosophy, stemming from his Italian heritage, is to make food-focused wines, with noticeable tannins and solid aging potential. The wines are intended for food and may even seem aggressive without it. Red wines to try from Barboursville include Octagon, Merlot, Nebbiolo and Cab Franc. Can't miss white wines include Pinot Grigio and Viognier.

Barboursville Vineyards - Wine Education:

Barboursville Vineyards takes its status as one of Virginia's premier wine estates very seriously. They offer $5 tastings of 15-20 wines, seven days a week from 10 - 5 p.m. (11 a.m. on Sundays), in a gorgeous tasting venue with helpful, friendly staff. Winery tours are offered on the weekends or by appointment and offer a glimpse not only into winemaking in general, but give a solid primer on the fascinating history of winemaking in Virginia, beginning with Jefferson's initial vintner visions. Self-directed tours of the surrounding historical Barboursville ruins are easily incorporated from Barboursville Vineyards.

Barboursville Vineyard's Palladio Restaurant:

Luca's food-friendly wine philosophy finds instant immersion at the quaint tables of Palladio, Barboursville Vineyard's Italian-inspired restaurant. Relying on fresh, seasonal ingredients and recruiting the savory culinary influences of northern Italy, Palladio serves up delicious delights ranging from handmade pasta dishes to pan-seared soft shell crab. The menu's sheer variety and creative culinary choices make for a compelling opportunity to pair Barboursville's wines with gourmet fare. Tried and true wine and food pairing tips dot the menu and knowledgeable waitstaff are happy to point you in the right direction.

Barboursville Vineyard's Lodging:

Barboursville Vineyard's lies in the heart of historic Virginia, so it's not surprising that the estate is graced with several elegant buildings circa early 1800s. An inn with three exquisite suites and backed by luxury cottage accomodations make an extended wine country excursion starting and ending with Barboursville Vineyards both exceedingly quaint and ultra convenient.
