Wine Scents - Science or Subjective?

Thursday July 13, 2006
To say we like the way a wine tastes may be a bit of a misnomer, as it turns out we like the way a wine smells a lot more. Recent research conducted by the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, readily concludes (again) that we in fact taste wine by it's smell. People are gifted with the ability to differentiate between thousands of unique scents, while only able to discern hundreds of different tastes. This being the case, it is no wonder that wine taste descriptions continue to be so far-reaching and often varied for a single wine.
