Purchasing Power - Supreme Court allows for the Purchase of Wines from out-of-state Wineries
Tuesday May 17, 2005
Could this be one more step, in the demise of the three-tiered wine distribution system? This three-tiered (producer, wholesaler, retailer) wine distribution system is an antiquated 80 year old relic, we have acquired thanks to the Liquor Prohibition that dominated the U.S. from 1920-1933? While, it may be a useful means to distribute wines to consumers in various states, does it need to be the only way, for select states? On Monday the Supreme Court ruled that states could no longer prohibit people from purchasing wine from out-of-state wineries.
