What's Up with the Wine Shipping Laws?

Discerning the legality of shipping wines directly to consumers has been a hot topic in the world of wine. Legislation has been set since the end of Prohibition allowing for a three-tiered system that includes two middle men (the wholesaler and the retailer) to distribute wine in the U.S. Which states allow direct shipping? Which states allow for reciprocal shipping and which states will not allow the shipment of wine by a commercial carrier?
