Wine of the Week: Pol Roger Brut 1998 (FR) $100

Thursday December 27, 2007

The 1998 vintage of the Pol Roger Brut is a noteworthy champagne for a couple of reasons. First, it hails from a difficult growing year - where many Champagne houses were hit early on with heavy frosts, hail and then pummeled with heavy rains and lower than expected temps, followed by scorching late summer heat. Secondly, this vintage is full of expressive flavors and the flavor profile is loaded with citrus fruit, and peachy nuances, it yields a buttery balance that is sustained through the finish.

This remarkable Champagne is composed of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir - a characterisitc blend for Pol Roger that yields full flavor, classic elegance and an enduring finish. This is a Champagne that you can be proud to serve at a New Year's Eve gathering, a formal dinner centered around lobster or caviar or perfectly capable of being sipped solo.
