Wednesday November 28, 2007
Wine Spectator has just released their Top 100 Wines of 2007 (pdf link). There may be some surprises and there may be a few of your personal favorites - either way it is an interesting listing of exceptional wines. The price range for the Top 100 maxes out at $250 for Krug Brut Champagne (1996) and bottoms out at $13 for a bottle of Chateau St. Jean Fumé Blanc from Sonoma County (2005).

Fume Blancs are often very delicious wines with nice complexity - I don’t understand why more Americans don’t know about these multi-layered, rich whites. I’ll never have another thin whiny Chenin Blanc now that I know about Fume’s. Fume Blancs are whites for people who like to drink a wine that has something interesting going on. If you like Pinot Grigio or White Zinfindal (I think of those as the dumb blondes and dumb strawberry blondes of wine), don’t buy a Fume. Think of Fumes as the Ivy League of white wines. I’m glad to see a Fume on the 100 Best list. Try one with your next fancy pale chicken or fish dish, or your Stouffer’s vegetable lasagna. Or just some good cheese and ripe pears.
