Wine of the Week: Baron de Ley Reserva, Rioja 2001 (Spain) $20

Follow me on:

The Baron de Ley Reserva, Rioja, is made from Tempranillo grapes (100%), amidst a Mediterranean climate. The profound result is an inviting red wine with both intrigue and sophistication, balanced by an innate versatility that lends this wine to the notable title of "ultra food friendly!" The color is deep garnet, the nose is powered by dark cherry fruit and the palate continues the "cherry power" with foundations of plum and raspberry laced with cloves, cardamon and nutmeg.

This Rioja wine boasts excellent value, terrific cellaring potential and a good price point for this famed vintage. Give the Baron de Ley Reserva a go with grilled veggies, dishes with heavy garlic, a wide variety of meats and cheeses - truly a versatile companion to finicky food.

Baron De Ley also has quite a history dating back to the 16th century, it was actually a Benedictine monastery prior to being acuired by the winery. The vineyard was supposedly active during that period as well.
