Wine of the Week: Firestone's Jarhead Red (CA) $13

Monday May 22, 2006
Firestone Vineyard's Jarhead Red is a fitting table wine for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend as it is made by Marines for Marines and directly benefits the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, an organization that offers educational assistance for the children of fallen Marines. Jarhead Red is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with plenty of jammy plum and blackberry flavors, integrated tannins and a perfect partner for this weekend's traditional burgers, brats and steaks.

Bought this yesterday, 6/13. What I got was a non-vintage red table wine, so I don’t know where you get “cab” from. The impression I got was of toasty cherry/vanilla nose and a pallet of earthyness and tobacco with some red fruit. It seemed to me more along the line of a tempranillo or sangiovesee blended with merlot. Not bad, though and for a worthy cause. (My son is a Marine in Iraq). Semper Fi

This is very satisfying and priced fairly. Firestone has been especially kind to Marine Corps Exchanges making it accessible to wine drinking Devil Dogs of all ranks.

There is a Jarhead Reserve that is a Bordeaux style offering (see their web site). This bottling is simpler field blend stuff with several sturdy Rhone-tasting varietals. So good that we bought a case at Pendleton PX prior to return to Central Oregon.

Oooorah.
